Vengeance and sorcery permeate this mysterious and somber story that recounts the struggle between l'abbe de la Croix-Jugan and the Chouans (bands of Norman Outlaws) against the French Republic.  Dispirited, the abbe tries to commit suicide, but survives.  His face is left terribly disfigured.  Yet, he proudly bears this disfiguration as a sign of his rebellion.  The two farmers who are telling the story, tells us of an honorable woman farmer who had become fascinated by the priest during a Mass at church.  She falls madly in love with him just to the point of delirium.  These farmers or shepherds who live on the Moors are practicing sorcery.  In the last scene above, one of them is showing the horrified husband a mirror in which is reflected his wife's heart on the fire--cooking.
