![]() Soldiers of the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division helped to liberate St. Sauveur-le-Vicomte, Normandy, France, June 16, 1944. Four troups were killed that day, two helmets lay on the street, called Rue Bottin Desylles. In memory of the death of the 4 soldiers, Pierre made "a bas relief" carving in mahogany and attached it to the front of his house. Pierre Bataille's house is on the right side of this street at the far end. Across the way, his grandfather's house, along with another four houses, was completely destroyed. Also to the extreme right, near the front of this photo is the entrance to the house of Barbey d'Aurevilly, now the Barbey d'Aurevilly Museum. The museum was inaugurated on March 17, 1989 by Alain Decaux, Minister of French literature and Olivier Stirn, Minister of Tourism. Click here to see the museum.
