Pierre Bataille's depiction of Jacques Cartier's exploration of Canada highlights his skillful treatment of space and form, and shows his brilliant talent for composition. He creates a compelling sense of place and time within the action.  Note the juxtaposition of the characters as they interact with one another, note their body language, their facial expressions, etc.  Bataille's ten years in the French theatre has given him a keen sense of appreciation for living in reality.  When you click on the panel, you will see a fine example of his approach to art.  It is rich both in information and psychological content.  His treatment of action can be witnessed by the interchange between the Indians and Cartier's men during the course of their encounters.
