The St. Lawrence Iroquoians had seen Cartier's men carve, in relief, an emblem of the King of France.  Now, they see the sailors building a ten-meter cross bearing the words, "Long Live the King of France". The sailors are kneeling in reverence to the cross which bears the King's insignia.  The Iroquois watch as Cartier's men plant the cross on their territory in the name of the King.  They fully grasp the significance of the situation.
