1985 to 1989
Pierre Bataille's interest in history
dates back to World War II, when, as a child, he witnessed the massive D-Day invasion of Normandy,
France. Ever
since, he has been grateful to the Allied
forces who liberated his small village from the German Occupation. His village was one of the first to be set free. During the
years that followed, Pierre Bataille pondered deeply over the inhumane treatment of
the Jews and decided to one day create a Memorial to them. In these
carvings, and with each chisel of the wood, Pierre Bataille brought into
existence their intense agony as witnessed by these tragic figures in the
panels. This vast
and impressive project, titled the Holocaust, came into realization
during the years 1985 to
1989.
